The copy-before-write test was failing on a Haswell machine, although it seems to work pretty reliably on the Zen 3 workstation and RK3588.

This is theoretically susceptible to the PID race, but such an event is statistically impossible, and not exploitable in the intended use case, regardless.

The DCE is a slow and overcomplicated solution to a simple problem. This change replaces the DCE by resolving errors in-flight.
